INAR 511 RITM INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO I
This course challenges students to investigate into the adaptation and conversion of existing buildings as a distinctive type of architectural and interior design. The Studio aims at fostering researchers advanced skills of designing interiors through a comprehensive design research and integral design process. Researchers will be trained in understanding essential aspects of complex interiors environments, and made familiar with the diverse issues, agents and strategies that enable a pivotal role in their making, while dealing with complex building projects, given the characteristics of the economy, the emergence of new building programs and the need to adapt existing structures.
INAR 512 RITM INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO II
This course attempts to provide a broad overview of adaptation and conversion of existing buildings that are important in terms of history of art/architecture, city identity, citizen memory. The course approaches the subject of Interventional Design, Building Adaptation and Transformation through the insight of the theoretical method of the interpretation and conversion employed by the designer, from the analytical assessment (Form and Structure, History and Function, Context and Environment, Proposed Function) through the strategic approach (Intervention, Insertion, Installation) to the tactics ‘details and elements’ (Planes, Objects, Light, Surfaces, Movements, Openings). The course covers essential aspects of interior design including environmental/social/technological issues, pre-planning stages, brief, survey, research, conceptual development, initial ideas and the project evolution steps. The main focus is the development of the entire design research with adequate proposals, project management skills, knowledge of sustainability, comfort, health and safety issues at the highest level.
INAR 521 DESIGN AND CULTURE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO I
The aim of the course is to furnish students with advanced skills of designing interiors through a comprehensive understanding of design culture and design research. The main focus is the development of the entire design research process with adequate proposals, project management skills, and knowledge of community, design culture and comfort. The course contents a comprehensive research on the subject reflecting current issues concerning the city as well as contemporary design ideas. The topics incorporate culture related spaces such as exhibition areas, museums, gastronomic, design and cultural centers, libraries, musical halls, theatres, operas and so on. Creative, alternative and/or contradictive design proposals are welcome. The course follows the design process incorporating data collection, analysis, synthesis, concept development and presentation of design projects.
INAR 522 DESIGN AND CULTURE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO II
This course aims to develop knowledge, skills and vision of students for advanced interior designs with an emphasis on design culture. It concentrates on the current issues of design and culture as well as the present and future aspirations of the design profession. The focus is on the analysis and evaluation of space, material, physical and technical factors, social needs, sustainability and the development of critical thinking. On the basis of a given design project, the course explores core interior design strategies, provides a structure with which students are encouraged to develop an individual design identity and a research pathway.
INAR 531 ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO II
The main focus of the course is to equip the students with the proper knowledge to tackle decisions regarding complex design tasks efficiently, taking into account of indoor environmental comfort. Furthermore, to prepare students for an interior architectural design career in a multi-disciplinary environment, by considering the multiple, conflicting criteria involved in interior design. The design studio has as a main focus the integration of computation into the interior architectural design process as a tool and partner that can provide valuable assistance and insight to the designer.
INAR 532 ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDIO II
The main focus of the course is to design public spaces using the indoor environmental comfort knowledge that they have gain. In addition to the energy performance also user perspective and perception will be a significant aspect of this studio. The design studio has as a main focus the integration of computation into the interior architectural design process and provides user comfort.
INAR 598 TERM PROJECT
The aim of this course is to provide advanced skills of research on a specific interior design problem. Students will develop key research methods, skills and gain an in-depth understanding of interior space and design process. The main focus is the development of the entire design research with briefs, survey, research and initial ideas. This lecture focuses on a research topic defined by the lecturer and the student. The student is supposed to prepare a project on the selected title, prepare a report and present it at the end of the semester within INAR 598 course.
INAR 551 USER PERCEPTION IN HOSPITAL DESIGN
The course aims to analyze perception of users in the regard of physical and psychological experiences in hospital design. It also aims to reveal spatial factors influencing perception both in individual and social levels. The course will be based on the spatial analysis of interior spaces in hospital. The students will be presented spatial parameters on the perception from the perspective of different user groups.
INAR 552 CURRENT DEBATES IN INTERIORS
The course aims at exploring current debates in the realm of interior design/architecture as well as contemporary issues of the discipline. It also aims to equip students with the academic terminology of the discipline.
INAR 553 BIOCLIMATIC DESIGN
This course will help the students to understand the interrelationship between nature and human interventions. It introduces design strategies based on such factors as site orientation, solar and wind effects, alternative materials, waste disposal and recycling. The aim is to produce design products by using minimal resources and by taking advantage of climate conditions. The aim of the course is to apply site analysis, orientation, climate, thermal and visual comfort strategies in any design project, to reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse effects.
INAR 554 INTERIOR LIFE CYCLE
This course aims to develop strategies to reduce the effect of materials on environmental degradation by using a cradle to cradle approach. Interior designs’ life cycles will be examined considering environmental impacts, energy sources, building materials, natural resources and waste. The course will make use of design theories, methods, and tools derived from various fields, concentrating on problem definition, description, creativity and analytical processes.
INAR 555 ADVANCED LIGHTING DESIGN
This course aims to give advanced lighting design knowledge on both daylight and artificial lighting design. Students will be introduced to lighting simulation software and expected to design and evaluate various scales of projects in terms of visual comfort and energy consumption. This course aims to provide detailed information on artificial lighting and daylighting design. Students are expected to apply the given information onto projects by using simulation tools. Students will also be introduced to current technologies on the market with site trips and presentations of production companies.
INAR556 LITERARY SPACE ANALYSIS
The aim of this course is to propose alternative research methods that will contribute to spatial epistemology by referring to spatial clues within literary spaces. Within the scope of the course, new information will be searched by reading and reinterpreting space in a critical way using the tools of literature, which will be used as a source of inspiration for exploring other ways of understanding space.
INAR 558 CINEMA AND DESIGN
This course aims to develop the awareness of interior architecture students on the cinematic medium as a mass communication tool. Students are asked to form a link between cinema and design by means of interpreting design works in the context of films. Doing close readings of interiors in various cinematic genres, they will be able to develop comparative perspectives in understanding the role of interior design in different narrative contexts.
INAR 560 INTERVENTION & MODIFICATION
This course approaches the subject of adaptive reuse through environmental issues, economic analysis and design. These fundamental concepts are applied to real-life projects of reuse to reduce negative impacts on the built environment. Course objectives include an understanding of energy and environmental context, the ability to develop schematic designs for energy efficient interventions in an existing building and the ability to perform basic analyses of energy performance.
INAR 562 HOME, CULTURE AND DESIGN
This course aims to introduce the relationship between cultural change and everyday life in relation to modernity. By means of reading and discussing significant writings and designs students will develop an understanding of such concepts as culture, modern life, modern interior, contemporary design and cultural representation. Adopting an interrogative approach, they will not only focus on issues related to current interior design-culture-house-product design discussions but also clarify their own standpoint in interior design issues.
INAR 564 CONSERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE AND PRINCIPLES OF RENOVATION
This course provides a broad overview of issues related to historical buildings. Students will learn the analysis of historical buildings and principles and various methods of conservation and renovation. They will be exposed to theoretical and technical aspects of the protection of cultural heritage. Course contents include definition and classification of historical buildings; characteristic of conservation and restoration; methods of renovation with original or contemporary materials; and principles of functional change in historical buildings.
INAR 566 ARCHITECTURAL CULTURE IN İZMİR
By discussing/analyzing/rediscovering/documenting a set of urban readings on the history of the city of İzmir and its architectural development, unidentified richness of the city will be understood. Urban, architectural and interior design characteristics of the city will be analyzed throughout the history by means of the examples that are existing/lost/transformed. Social and cultural sustainability, housing architecture of İzmir, İzmir history project and current issues related to the history of the city in terms of protection of the architectural and cultural heritage are the main topics that are discussed.
INAR 568 HEALTHY BUILDINGS AND INDOOR ENVIRONMENTS
This course focuses on scientific theories and design principles of healthy interior design approaches and productive space design in architecture. Students will understand environmental impacts on buildings, climate, comfort requirements, ventilation/heating/cooling strategies, daylighting, artificial lighting needs, and healthy material selections and make informed decisions on healthy architectural design practice. The course contents a comprehensive research on the subject reflecting current issues concerning objective analysis of environmental effects by applying rational as well as innovative methods aiming on raising health awareness in design practice.
INAR 580 HISTORY AND THEORY OF ADAPTIVE REUSE
This course examines works of major architects working in adaptive reuse in Europe (Italy, France, England, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands) and in North America from the nineteenth century to date. Case studies will include buildings, unbuilt projects, and urban assemblages. Interventions for adaptive reuse will be discussed in their social, political, technological, cultural and economic contexts. Special emphasis will be given to interior renovations, additions, and transformations.
INAR 590 SEMINAR
The course addresses methods of structuring a scientific research on a specific subject and writing a paper in conjunction with thesis requirements. The course content includes clarifying the specifics of selecting a topic, and the preparation, development and submission of the term paper. Students are encouraged to think independently and develop their ability in written, oral and visual presentations.
