People spent a lot of time indoors and the positive/negative effects of indoor air quality have been the subject of many studies. The positive effects of good indoor air quality on the employees in the offices were also supported and many studies were conducted to improve the indoor air quality. The effects of photosynthesis on the indoor carbon dioxide level is proved by the literature review, and in this context, the effect of microalgae on the indoor CO2 level was measured in an office in Yaşar University. Studies with microalgae are generally in laboratory environment or concept ideas, and the contribution of algae to indoor air quality has been lacking in terms of measurement by case analysis method. For this reason, this thesis is presented as a step to contribute to closing the gap in this subject and also to make many design alternatives in the future in interior spaces by using microalgae, depending on the results. This thesis was designed to measure the effects of two different microalgae types and quantities (80 L Spirulina sp. and 50 L Chlorella vulgaris mixtures) on indoor CO2 levels from the beginning of November 2018 until the end of March 2019 by considering the number of users and occupancy rate. Experiments were performed in two sections, and the results showed that the level of CO2 in the office was generally acceptable, but due to the lack of natural ventilation, users often complained of tiredness and headache. The effects of different types and amounts of microalgae on the CO2 level is resulted differently for two altered types. The reduction of the indoor CO2 levels with 80 L Spirulina sp. was measured as 1% on the workdays and 5% on weekends. At the same time, the amount of CO2 increase was slower than when there was no microalgae in the office. However, the results of the 50 L Chlorella vulgaris mixture is not enough to reduce the indoor CO2 level on workdays and weekends also.

Thesis Title:SHADING DEVICE DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION VIA GENETIC ALGORITHM BY USING SURFACE TEMPERATURE METRIC AND ELECTRICITY LOAD

The world population is increasing over the years. More and more natural resources are needed to meet the growing population needs. However, natural resources are limited and should be consumed wisely in order to be used in the following years. In this context, architects and engineers have great responsibility for the management of resources. It is their responsibility to provide adequate resources for future generations and to meet the needs of today. Therefore, the concept of sustainability has emerged over the years and has been one of the most emphasized issues today. Sustainability also has an important place in architectural design. Sustainable use of resources is supported by reducing energy use in buildings. Because people spend an important part of their time indoors. Most people are in office space during the daylight hours. In this thesis, an optimization study was carried out to reduce energy use in office buildings by using shading element. Shading elements, especially in the south facade of glass with solar radiation control by preventing overheating. In this study, the variables of the organic, triangular geometry shading element integrated into the southern façade are solved as a multi-objective optimization problem by the evolutionary algorithm which is HypE genetic algorithm. One of the two purposes of the problem is keeping the internal temperature of the glass between 20℃ and 27℃ for every hour of the year and the other is the minimum energy consumption for the interior lighting. The horizontal shading element and the flat triangular geometry shading element together with the shading element without the shading element have been studied and compared for the performance evaluation of this proposed organic triangular geometry shading element. Firstly, the shading element and without energy simulation of the test geometry for each shading element was modeled in the “Grasshopper”, which is an add-on of Rhinoceros, and the variables “Ladybug Honeybee” were identified in its program. The “Octopus” Grasshopper plug-in connects the prepared variables to give a two-dimensional optimization problem “pareto front” based result set. The results are evaluated by selecting from the group. The evaluation criteria are the operative temperature, the indoor temperature, the energy obtained from the total sunlight. As a summary, three main issues have been concluded. First it is seen that which type has better performance which is organic, triangular based geometry. Secondly, Shading device geometry can be found with generative model via evolutionary algorithms. It is shown one more time that evolutionary algorithms are applicable to complicated architectural problems. At least, in the evaluating phase of the shading devices, a new metric which is surface temperature metric is referred in the study. The success of the new metric is a good comparing element for the study and the metric may help the further studies in the literature.

This study considers the architectural characteristics of mosques in Iran from the initial date of constructing to the contemporary ones. Iranian architecture is one of the world’s reputable architectures. It was one of the most significant architectures in the medieval Islamic world. Iranian architecture has expanded over millenary in reply to its religion. All traditional and indigenous Mosques in Iran exhibit that their architects had been so bright in coordinating Iranian religion and architecture in the past. The selected cases are outstanding examples of contemporary mosques in Iran. Five modern mosques in various cities of the country were determined and evaluated as case studies. Their architects are innovative in their design intention and demonstrate their own project approach and explanation outside the mainstream of contemporary mosque design in Iran. Different aspects like material, plan, construction method, design and other features are considered in this thesis. For this purpose both qualitative and participant-observation were used as a research method. On this basis, this study indicates that Iran, as a country with rich and unique architecture, unfortunately does not benefit the contemporary methods in mosque architecture because of public beliefs and government’s policies.

The need for new construction has led to radical demolition of vernacular and historic buildings. Furthermore, to meet contemporary needs in construction, vernacular buildings have been abandoned despite their simplicity, inheritance of historic values and resistance to seismic actions (as seen in some buildings around the world). In South-Western Nigeria (the Yoruba area of the country), many palaces have been abandoned and are out of use after the demise of the king that occupied them. This is prominent in Ibadan. Having investigated the conditions of two palaces in this study – Aleshinloye and Aare Latoosa Palaces – adaptive reuse was suggested to rehabilitate and rejuvenate them while putting together the main content of the three adaptive reuse theories of technical, typological and strategic approaches. This paper reviews the literatures on adaptive reuse of historical buildings and suggests a method of adaptation. It also emphasizes a major advantage of prolonging the useful life of all vernacular buildings by reusing them for a purpose that will benefit the locals. The interviews held during investigation revealed the importance of several historic elements in the palaces and a restoration project was suggested so that these elements are retained and/or redesigned so as to maintain the historic value of the palaces. The study exploits the potentials of the abandoned palaces, suggested possible adaptive reuse that suits their structural conditions. Furthermore it reveals that maintaining and reusing these palaces could uplift the historic value and heritage landscape of the community with social, economic and other historic benefits.

Down the centuries human beings produced local architectural patterns in compatibility with their lifestyles by taking into account the socio-cultural structures, environmental factor (climate, vegetation, geographical position etc.) and local materials. Architecture is a trace of culture and history representing the past of the humanity. Local houses are the elements providing the possibility to sustain the local socio-economic structure and history. These houses are the buildings organized by public with original plan typologies and constructions systems on the basis of respect to nature and human being. That’s why vernacular architecture plays the lodestar role towards the future. In the rural areas the local houses were built by owners in a modest way by using local materials in compatibility with cultural and socio-economic structures.
In the regions undergoing evolution and transformation, the local and regional housing entities are being diminished as time passes. The houses started to lose their original architectural values and their interior space elements. The local houses are being replaced with monotone buildings distant from the socio-cultural texture of the locality. In order to ensure the continuity of the common consciousness of the society the local elements should be documented, protected and sustained. Within the context of those problems a place under the threat of extinction of the local housing characteristics was chosen for the study. The subject of this study is the Inner Castle Houses in the Quarter Sığacık of the Seferihisar District. In the Sığacık Inner Castle area a street facade sanitization project was applied after the Cittaslow title was granted to Seferihisar and activities to modify the functions of the houses were started. This thesis aims to review out those activities by revealing the sustainability of the social and cultural texture of the Inner Castle area and the compatibility with interior structures of the local houses. This study tries to determine the relation between the socio-cultural and local texture of Inner Castle settlement and the design of the interior spaces of the local houses. Another purpose of the thesis is to find out the local architecture features and the interior space elements of the houses of Sığacık Inner Castle area and to make contribution to the activities trying to ensure the cultural sustainability of the houses.
The analysis of the selected houses and evaluations of the findings enabled to understand the interior spaces of houses better. It is expected that obtained results provide some support to the sustainability of the cultural elements which making the buildings meaningful. Thus, it is targeted to make some contribution to the accumulation of the long past which is needed to shape the future.

This thesis examines the approach of modern architecture and/or modernism in the modern housing interiors. When the term modernism is mentioned in architecture, it is looked at from the structural aspect or the building shell. Discussing modernism in interior design has not been comprehensively covered and as such, this study attempts to make connections between modernism and the housing interior. The course of this study thoroughly examines how the principles that relate to modernism, which are being applied to any architectural design, have been reflected into interior design.
Eight cases were selected for this research, which will be the focus of study as examples of single-family housing, spanning between the 1920s and 1950s, which are located both in Europe and the United States of America. These two geographies are considered important in the discourse of modernism as they set the foundation for modern architecture. Apart from literature review on modernism, modern housing and specific characteristics of the era, the case studies have been carefully studied by analyzing their interior design characteristics, by means of colored interior images. The criteria selected in this study for analyzing the modern housing interiors are plan layout, materials, furniture, and colors of interior elements. These criteria are considered as major or most influential characteristics of interior design, which reflect interior design approach completely.
This research also aims at establishing a better understanding on how modernist design principles transcend into other fields and for the purpose of this study, interior design. It also shows the progression of the modern housing interior as the century evolved, creating domestic interiors that were a reflection of the growth of the modern era and modernity concerning the lives of the people. The case study houses are compared with each other according to their respective eras as regards design approach in plan layout, materials, furniture and interior colors. This is made as an indication to determine how the modern interior advanced through these two different geographies.
It is aimed that this study will serve as a means to encourage designers to appreciate housing interiors and to examine the principles or ideologies that give them meaning, providing knowledge concerned with shaping the future.

This thesis examines bank branch interior design, space organization and interior components through increasing work efficiency. The physical conditions affecting bank employees’ work efficiency, such as air-conditioning, furniture systems, space organization and waiting areas, have been examined. The circulation, work and service areas, open and closed office departments and transparent and non-transparent divider systems between them have been researched. In addition, bank furniture, such as workstations for single and double units, box-office units and storage systems have all been researched and interior components, such as wall, ceiling and floor coverings and their materials and systems have been examined. Heating and air-conditioning systems have been researched and it has been determined how climate control systems affect interior space positively and negatively. Lighting systems in interior spaces have been researched together with artificial lighting and furniture design.
Basically, the thesis method includes a survey study of existing interior space, furniture and interior component specifications by taking photos and making sketch drawings of the interiors of bank branches located in İzmir. The thesis work has been applied to nine (%1.5) of the existing bank branches in Izmir, which total about six hundred. In addition, the bank branches that have been studied under this thesis subject were chosen from different bank chains to ensure and better determine the basic subject of the thesis, `interior design of bank branches?. By studying different chains of bank, the optimum conditions for interior design of banks can be determined more clearly. The results of the surveys have been evaluated for bank furniture and interior design, which will be helpful for future branch design. The interior design components, for example space organization, interior dividers, moveable and fixed furniture design, workstation groups, fine structure components, such as wall, floor and ceiling coverings, lighting and ventilation design, doors, showcase and facade designs have been included under this thesis subject. Examples of bank building designs from abroad and Turkey have been reviewed and literary research has been conducted by looking at optimum space organization of new bank branch design. This thesis consists of six chapters which include all of these subjects.

Kindergarten education which includes pre-school education units is an important phase that underlies continuing education. This period, including 3-6 year old children’s education involves a rapid improvement in technological and scientific developments, mothers attending active work life and adaptation to the current information and communication age, has become a part of fundamental education. Gaining constructive, creative, questioning skills and awareness of personality feature in the 3-6 age period, which is the most critical phase in child development and is among the aims of kindergarten education. Achieving these goals will be helpful for a child’s development in terms of psychological and physiological development and thanks to this development a child’s behavior benefits by designed education buildings. Connected with a rapid rise of environmental pollution and decrease in natural sources, living spaces are coming under threat and as a result, both the user’s comfort and life satisfaction, and environment-friendly building designs being integrated to kindergarten building is becoming more important for environment protection consciousness. These are important improvements for 3- 6 years old children’s gaining environment protection consciousness and their meeting with environment-friendly spaces that may be distant from them. Within the scope of this thesis, kindergarten education buildings in which the child meets and understands social environment after his/her family, are analyzed in the light of preschools designed with awareness of environment protection consciousness in countries worldwide and the findings obtained are compiled here. The aim of this study is to analyze kindergartens through examples according to environment-friendly design criteria which determined under the name of; physical environment data’s, structural form, efficient landscape designs, provision of efficient indoor air quality, efficient daylight saving, efficient energy usage and water efficient design. By making surveys on environment-friendly buildings, within 5-6 years old kindergarten students’ group; and to present structural design criteria considered in environment-friendly kindergarten buildings with a general view. This study will serve as a source that sheds light on environment- friendly kindergarten buildings design, examples of which have not been seen in Turkey. This will contribute to kindergarten buildings that will be designed from now on.

Thesis Title: PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF RESIDENTIAL KITCHENS: SUSTAINABLE AND USER FRIENDLY DESIGNS

In this study, performance of kitchen was evaluated by users, the results were compared with sustainability and given sustainable kitchen design suggestions. Aim of the study is to evaluate kitchen performance according to user’s views and to present most suitable kitchen design in terms sustainability. With this aim, how location, type, kitchen layout, furniture, ergonomics should be, what kind of material and lighting are preferred by users are evaluated. Then, whether they are appropriate to sustainability or not and whether users are satisfied with ventilation, waste control and appliances were investigated. What kitchen’s deficiency are according to users were answered.
40 kitchen users which are from different socio-economic status, attended to the survey. 20 of the participants live in detached houses and the rest live in flats. Firstly, a questionnaire was prepared by the researcher and was given to experts analysis for content validity. Then it was applied to participants. Questionnaire includes 42 items, some of which are open-ended. Obtained data was entered to the SPSS 16.0 programme. While analyzing data, frequency and mean techniques were used.The researcher kept tally for open-ended questions.
According to findings, users prefer G and island shaped kitchen having, 5-10 square meters, 80-85 cm counter height, 200-300 cm counter lenght, 3-4 cm thickness of counter, 35-40 or 40-45 cm cabinetry depth. Refrigerator-cooker, refrigerator-sink distance should be 50-100 cm and sink-cooker distance should be 0-50 cm. Users are satisfied with painted-lacquer cupboard and marble counters. Findings are mostly suitable for sustainability, except the use of painted lacquer. If it is used, it must contain bio-paint and be non-toxic. Fluorescents, bio-filtered fans, natural lighting, garbage disposal are also preferred by the users. Defiency of the kitchens are: the inadequacy of cupboard capacity, non-existence of garbage disposal, small size of kitchens and high energy efficient appliances.

Our cultural heritage, which inevitably has been facing the danger of extinction as a result of rapid urbanization after 1950, has document value by epitomizing life styles of the periods witnessed. This document value, carried by historical houses reflect the social, economic and cultural life of the society to space, is a set of values which transfer information to the next generations. They also reflect the social, cultural and economic life of the environment involved, within the discourse of universal protection. Despite this importance, our historical buildings could not reach up to the present due to the demand of people to transit from a traditional lifestyle to a modern one. It is also due to the fact that many of these structures were made with much weaker materials than those of today. Kula, with its historical urban texture and traditional residential architecture, allows us to find information about the traditional Turkish Houses of the 18th and 19th century. This district, today has up to about 900 registered structures bear a significant value when compared to it counterparts in Anatolia, acts like a mirror that provides information about the past conditions of life, construction materials, customs and traditions of the society. The reflections of these structures allow us to obtain information about the construction technology, handcrafts and decorations of the period. Within the scope of this thesis, closets allow us to obtain information about the architectural approach, building materials and techniques, decoration concepts and detailed solutions of the period were examined in the case of Kula. Wooden artisanship construction methods and decorations were studied in detail. In order to transfer to future generations, photos, building surveys and inventories were carried out. These will help to preserve the closets in these rooms without losing their originality. Up to the present no work has not been done on this subject. Modern design can only be better with knowledge in the past. Therefore the construction of our design heritage gain significance. This study examined traditional house closets and tried to extract clues for our present day design and practice.

When people enter a building, they expect to see way finding elements, during way finding period, they need a guidance to decide which path or route to follow at next stage. To ease this way finding period, cognitive or mental map of the space will provide valuable information. During the design stage, the building’s designer can improve the cognitive map of the context by developing necessary design strategies. Since today’s architectural design of the healthcare buildings has undergone vast amount of changes, past experiences indicate that interior design is the most crucial factor in the hospital setting. Especially, the hospitals in which no Way finding Strategies and Cognitive Mapping System are set off may cause the patients and/or visitors to experience some difficulties while deciding the route to reach a target location. Due to different selective of perceptions, people differ in cognition of place and sub places with an impact of age and gender. Way finding failures in the building enhance navigational breakdowns. For this purpose, considering the way finding problems, usage of affective way finding elements and human spatial cognition is studied within the case study of Aegean University Polyclinics.

Negative effects of the buildings on the environment such as emission of the greenhouse gas and the toxic gas increases from day to day. It is aimed to reduce these kinds of negative effects on the environment with the aid of sustainable design criterions. In the present day, numerous studies related to the sustainability of tourism sector have been started. All the regulations and the legislations concerned with these issues are reviewed. In the meanwhile, in order to raise the consciousness and the mental capacity of the people about this issue, quite numbers of studies are carried out. In the context of sustainable tourism, maintaining the sustainability by constructing the buildings with the approaches that are sensitive to environment, take the place of basis responsibilities. In this study, first of all, in order to obtain sustainable hotel design, literature reviews have been accomplished and using these data, designation problems related to hotel design have also been specified. In content of this thesis, criterions with respect to the sustainable hotel design have been determined and in the meantime concerned approaches have been developed. At the same time wide range of samples of the hotel designed with the intention of eco-friendly and also sensitive to consciousness of protection of the environment have been investigated and the findings have been compiled properly. As part of the aim of this study, wide range of hotel samples have been examined and prepared the flow charts and also compared each other?s in terms of the seven sustainable design criterions including choice of the suitable materials, productive energy design, water consumption, ensuring the effective air condition in the interior site of the hotels, use of day light effectively, structural form and the management of contaminants. However this study will contribute all the hotel structures and is the sample for design studies in Turkey and also considered as the source study in literature.

In architecture, the concept of design in the contemporary sense first appeared in 1920s by the emergence of modernism. Previous approaches were completely traditional and individual. By the emergence and the development of modernism, a theoretical and international approach in design was adopted for the first time. In the history of architecture, many examples inspired by the nature can be observed. Through the industrial revolution and advancements in technology the observations in nature diversified and branched into several fields. The contemporary movements developed afterwards were conceptually established on the foundations of modernism. Following this era in the beginning of the 20th century, the new materials, and construction techniques emerged by the advancements in technology besides the socio-economic developments and competition in Europe resulted in significant changes in architecture and design. From this era to present day in addition to many pioneering countries in Europe, Scandinavian designs influenced the movements significantly. This thesis study focuses on the effect of nature on Scandinavian design in the modernism era and on designs of Finish architect Alvar Aalto who is one of the pioneers of the era.

Globalization and competitive market strategies in Turkey since 1980s accelerated construction sector and brought gated communities into our lives. Gated communities were criticized to cause incoherence in the social structure despite the high demand especially in major cities of Turkey. This study aims to gain insight on the phenomena and popularity of gated communities in İzmir, from the perspective of gated community residents. The theory of place attachment is used to generate a theoretical framework for this study which is supported by literature research. Place attachment is a psychological well-being in the proximity of a place. The literature research points out three approaches on place attachment: identity, dependence and affection. Socio-demographic characteristics can affect the strength of attachment and place attachment motivates people to behave more responsible towards their environments. A survey questionnaire was conducted in Soyak Mavişehir to determine the profile of attached residents; the significance of place attachment aspects and the consequences of place attachment in gated communities. Statistical analysis found that 58 out of 100 residents of the sample are above the mean of attachment score (3.39 out of 5) however none of the socio-demographic characteristics is related to the strength of attachment. Affection is a significant indicator of attachment while the comparability of activities is not significant. The thesis concludes that place attachment in gated communities is not productive but consumptive practices of everyday life. Following the results and discussions some recommendations for the future studies is also presented.

Work environments are spaces which constitute an important element of our daily lives. Spaces in which we work comprise almost a whole day of our lives. Office buildings are constructions where these spaces are located in. Increasing the concentration and productivity of workers is crucial during the design of office buildings. In this perspective; specifying the physical and psychological needs of the users in office constructions and determining the elements that will affect their productivity is the main purpose of this study. This research mentions about the office space developed from the past to the present and examines the types of offices which are generated from this development. The physical and psychological spatial needs are specified under two main titles. The physical needs are spatial, air-conditioning, lighting and sound. Also physical needs of lighting and air conditioning, decreasing the energy wasted in the office spaces and ensuring the optimum circumstances are examined in terms of sustainability. The psychological needs are categorized as privacy, behavioral and aesthetics. In order to interrogating the hypothesis generated from the criteria of physical and psychological needs and questioning the researches information, a survey is performed in two different office organizations. These organizations are the companies of Pınar Et and Tariş which are located in Izmir.

The increase in the industrial and technological developments since the Industrial Revolution led the deterioration of the ecological balance and extinction of natural resources. Sustainability which came out as a solution within this subject also became an important part of interior architecture as in other disciplines related to design. The placement and design of the lighting criteria and the sufficient usage of daylight cover an important part of the criteria of sustainability. The lighting systems of the offices which are the secondary degree living areas of the humans should be evaluated in terms of sustainability. This study aims to separate the lighting systems and lighting criteria in the offices according to the types and sections of the office, evaluate them according to the criteria of sustainability, and talk about the issues which have to be taken into consideration in order to analyze the lighting systems.
This study includes four main chapters. The introduction chapter covers the definition of sustainability and talks about the aim, coverage and method of the study. In the second chapter, the definition, history, and the types of the office were mentioned. In the third chapter, light, color, glare, lighting and types of lighting were analyzed and a general information about BREEAM, LEED, CASBEE and Green Star certificates which evaluate the sustainability of the buildings was given; the studies related to lighting systems and perspectives about the lighting regarding the evaluation of the sustainable buildings were analyzed. In the fourth chapter, measurements of lighting energy by separating the types and departments of the office building in an office with a certificate and an office building without one. These two different offices were evaluated and compared according the sustainable lighting criteria with separating the office sections. In the conclusion chapter, within the concept of the lighting systems and calculations of a sustainable building with a certificate was analyzed in terms of the implementation of the sustainable lighting systems, the efficient usage of daylight, support given to the daylight by the artificial lighting, the types of light choices and their ecological, environmental and economic benefits.

In this research, effects of targeted attainments provided by basic design studios’ education are examined via basic design studios which are supported by creative drama activities providing similar attainments instead of methods in traditional design studios. In this direction, experimental studies which are designed and applied by the researcher are used as a method. With experimental studies, students’ more active participation to learning process and more productive and more understandable transfer of design issues by supporting them with creative drama activities and in this direction, a more successful design process experience is targeted. Hospitals are buildings that consume major energy in various areas such as heating, cooling and lighting. This study was conducted considering these hospital building groups due to the increase in the importance of the energy efficiency in the hospitals both in the world and in our country.
Energy at building envelope, cost, and environmental studies were conducted in this study. Therefore, low cost and reduced energy consuming outer wall model was established by minimizing the environmental effects through establishing the conditions and inputs for a comfortable indoor condition for people/patients with minimum energy consumption.
Depending on the proper construction, TS 825 Thermal Insulation Standard specifies maximum annual energy demand which covers topics such as heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water and lighting. However, in order to provide energy conversation by the building envelope, there is a specific heat transmission coefficient value or U value. Heat transmission coefficient (U) for the city of Izmir was determined as U≤0,70 according to TS 825 Thermal Insulation Standard. It is possible to obtain many details that would procure the U value. Therefore in this study, 24 different details were established within the context of a dissertation in order to provide the minimum U-values which would result in minimum values for building envelope. Consequently, initial investment costs and environmental impacts of each of the details differ.
Material thickness regarding the U value was established by using TS 825 Thermal Insulation program while wall model was created. Providing thermal comfort and being one of the major application fields, thermal insulation was focused on building envelope by examining the environmental impacts with life cycle analyses (LCA) conducted on Simapro program.
An exterior insulation focused, energy effective, cost-effective and environment-friendly wall model was created in this study. The aim is to support the decision-makers by shedding light on the issues that are currently being underrated by the decision-makers and encouraging the consideration of the environmental impact and cost of the building envelope’s material selection.

Housing units of the Post-Republican Period, which preserve most of their daily use components, are noteworthy sources for the history of Turkish architecture, interior design and industrial design. These modern dwellings contain a variety of production goods, materials and elements. It must be understood that they are also final products of qualified design manners. These buildings are usually low density buildings. Transformation of the housing stock on a plot basis increased in Turkey with the enactment of the Urban Transformation Law in the year of 2012. It can be seen that housing units of the Post-Republican Period are pretty desirable and profitable for urban transformation activities, when it is considered their features and rental values. This transformation process is unsafe that it is damaging the history of architecture, interior and industrial design. In order to minimize its undesirable consequences, it becomes significant to ascertain, document and interpret certain buildings, although they may have completed their economic lives. This thesis aims to document and interpret a sample of such housing in Karşıyaka between the years 1948 and 1965. This is necessary in order to maintain a continuous history of architecture and design which is a significant ingredient of our cultural and social life. This thesis evaluates possibilities of a documenting and interpreting components of Turkish architecture, interior and industrial design in order to save their legacy.

Usually when it is said ‘kindergarten period” it is understood one or two years before the children start school. Kindergarten term is used mostly for 3-6 years old children that are educated on well-arranged programme in institutions. In the widest sense the kindergarten period starts with the birth of a child and continuous until the child starts basic education. In this study will be discussed in detail the effect of design constituting sustainability consciousness in kindergarten.
If this study want to describe the sustainability not just according to architecture but generally; fulfilling the needs of today according to possible future demands, using the resources effectively, not harming the environment, recycling the waste and we can summarize this to leave livable world for the future generations. Educators are paying high attention on awareness and consciousness for establishing sustainability, and are suggesting “education for sustainability” for children before school to establish this kind of point of view.
In this thesis we researched the principles to enhance the sustainable buildings. In this study, after mentioning the importance of sustainability in education, we studied the important subjects in kindergarten design such as using the natural light, heating, cooling, air conditioning, wind power, not wasting water and material selection. Also criticize the world for not paying enough attention to sustainable buildings; although there are recently some improvements in Turkey, but there have to be more implementation and research regarding to sustainable buildings. Another goal is to provide extra source for sustainable kindergarten designs.

Abstract: The main concern with contemporary architecture in Persia is in the fact that it is losing its ancient architectural identity which contained Islamic architectural motives alongside Persia’s rich traditions and architecture.Traditional architecture was designed according to culture and climate. Old Persian architecture had a reason behind every feature used in its architectural buildings, whereas contemporary buildings do not own these characteristics. Today’s architecture has lost its foundamental values and it no longer holds to its traditions and identity. Looking at today’s architectual ornamentation and comparing them with traditional architecture we witness that traditional ornaments and decorations once used in ancient Persian architecture has been forgotten. The aim of this study is to research traditional architecture in order to form a framework that can benefit contemporary architecture. Thus today’s architecture can inspire from the beneficial, intelligent traditional architecture and find its identity again. To reach this goal, traditional houses are good examples, since we can study the reasons behind every feature used in their architecture. Algeria as a country of 2,381,741 square kilometers has three different climate zones respectively: Mediterranean, semi-arid and arid, in its three different regions: Northern, Central and Southern. Each region has developed its typical vernacular tradition; one that responded to climate, topography and life style. Following modernization and westernization of the country since one hundreds of years, traditional building practices started to be abandoned, leading to a radical transformation of the built environment. The current situation of the urban environment depends only on reinforced concrete construction that does not respond to the country’s regional variety as it disregards nature, climate and lifestyles of many. This study explores the vernacular building types from the two geographical regions of the country; Casbah (Mediterranean) and M’zab (arid) in order to understand their sustainable architectural design strategies; their own responses to climate, and their fit with the people’s lifestyle. The aim is to evaluate the degree of sustainability achieved on those traditional building practices. This will be concluded first by knowing the architectural design principles which should be in a building in order to call it sustainable. This research helps to understand more about the architectural heritage of Algeria. It gives us a clear knowledge on design strategies of traditional houses in the two regions according to the climate, lifestyle, and local available materials. The findings show that, both case studies have precious sustainable methods, and powerful in the most sustainable criteria, when it comes to the three standards of sustainability: economy of resources, life cycle design, and design for humane comfort. These might be useful for designers and architects in using those sustainable strategies in their new building projects.

Abstract: As buildings remain insufficient in the face of social and cultural developments and fall short of satisfying daily needs, they are abandoned, become decrepit, and even demolished. Thus, these buildings have to be renovated and re-functioned. There is a great stock of buildings which have lost their functions both within Turkey and the world, and many are waiting to be re-functioned. For these buildings to be utilized correctly and get re-functioned, planning is a necessity .Renovation and re-functioning applications on historic buildings are becoming more prevalent in Turkey. Just as in many developed countries; their importance within the architectural practice is increasing. Therefore the quality of their design and application is getting more crucial. Re-functioning projects and applications must preserve the value of historic buildings, while a new design enriches the building without damaging these values. Historical continuity can only be achieved in this manner. As an extension of modern preservation understanding, the renovated intervention methods (conservation, restoration, re-functioning, etc) varies depending on many different parameters. A sustainable re-functioning cannot be achieved in buildings that have lost their values and those which are not functioned properly, thus making these buildings idle. It is an interesting fact that recent foreign functioning efforts adopt the “Experience Economy Model” developed by Pine and Gilmore. This approach makes an efficient and effective evaluation of the variable parameters in the functioning process.

Abstract: Due to the rapid development of the world, utilizing energy resources in an efficient way becomes one of the most controversial topics in today’s area. In the light of this not only using alternative renewable energy resources but also consuming overall energy efficiently should be considered. As most of our lives continue in closed environments, such as factories, offices and residential areas, efficient energy consumption in buildings plays a great role in this aspect. From this point of view both architecture and interior architecture try to propose various solutions to the problem such as using waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency and indoor air quality in accepted levels.
Considering these facts, this thesis focuses on one of the weakest links in efficient energy consumption as existed hotels due to high amount circulation. During this thesis, after describing the precautions that should be taken in buildings to reduce energy and water consumption, to improve waste management and indoor air quality in one of the biggest hotel chains in Turkey, “Gural Premier Tekirova” will be analyzed with respect to the related date received from the Hotel officials and solutions are proposed to improver sustainability measures.

Abstract: This thesis examines the restaurant interiors through lighting design criteria and looks at relationship between brand identity and lighting design. The study is about how the lighting affects brand identity in restaurant design. It comprises how the lighting design should be so that they affect the marketing strategies. Also, the restaurant design has included other fields of design, which are interior design, exterior space design and graphic, art and logo design. The method of the study is based on a case study, about Bisquitte-Optimum, Gazemir in İzmir, the restaurant is an important example of fast casual dining restaurant. The restaurant lighting design is examined in the direction of brand identity of Bisquitte restaurant chain.
This thesis designates the lighting design and brand identity criteria in accordance with increase efficiency of relationship between interior atmosphere and customers. The example of restaurant’s lighting systems from abroad and Turkey have been reviewed and literature search have been made by looking at relation between lighting design, brand identity and marketing. Case study was determined by the concept of the chosen example and the criteria in the context of brand identity on marketing strategies. The results of case study have been evaluated for lighting design and brand identity criteria; they have been helpful for making differences in competitive environment.

Abstract: By critically analyzing components of contextual design in museum exhibition practice over the past century, this thesis presents an exploratory analysis in new museum practice; museums of luxury fashion brands. This new museum practice is deeply rooted in and dependent upon contextual design components in museums and other design constituents based on brand identity. The interplay between fashion and identity, aesthetic universality and quality of luxury fashion brands and contextual approach to design practice establish a comprehensive framework to understand the characteristics and key design components for museums of luxury fashion brands. The study is generated by data-gathering and data-analysis methods to evaluate the physical and intellectual content of the subject and to provide a useful tool for future studies. Archival materials were collected through visits to Fondazione Prada, Fondation Cartier, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Gucci Museo and Armani Silos and supplemented by on-site interviews, academic reviews and media reports. As this thesis investigates the role of fashion, brand identity and context in design, it provides new and original insights into the new museum practice. Hence, it is also contributes to growing literature on museum and theoretical debates within the larger field of design issues based on identical and contextual components.

Abstract: As hospitals are functionally complex structures, hospital users – patient, relatives and staff – are in a stressful mood for different reasons. Because of the crowd, patients and their relatives can stay in waiting areas for a long time. It is important that the physical environment they are in during this expectation does not give them any additional stress. As a result of the researches and observations made, it has been found that this stress and tension have declined positively in places where full conformity to human needs is mentioned. At this point, the prominence of interior quality emerges.
This thesis evaluates the quality of clinic waiting areas and their user expectations. It concentrates on their human-based designs and their physical and psychological impact on users. Two equivalent state hospitals were selected as the study area since 2010, selected hospitals are state hospitals with similar capacities, similar characteristics and in the general hospital category. The most significant difference between these hospitals is the positioning and functioning of the outpatient waiting areas in the plan. While the waiting area in Tire State Hospital is divided for each outpatient clinic, there are common waiting areas at Çeşme State Hospital. Comparisons between these areas have been made in order to examine in more detail the effect of this different scheme on users. As a comparative method, post-use evaluation method was applied and literature survey and observation were done in addition to data collection by questionnaire.
In addition to comparing the plan layout of the two outpatient clinic outpatient clinics, the concepts of orientation and confidentiality/limitations with interior components such as materials, color/texture, lighting/visual comfort, ventilation, acoustic/visual comfort, furniture, it was investigated. It has been found that there are some differences between the two hospitals in terms of acoustic comfort, privacy, natural lighting and ventilation resulting from the differentiation of the scheme.
At the first stage, the literature was searched and related subjects were investigated. Then visits to the hospitals were made for observation, photographs and preliminary surveys and a questionnaire was applied to the users in the waiting area to identify the main problems. Through questionnaires, the physical and psychological needs of users and aesthetic pleasures were questioned under the headings of security, privacy, ergonomics and hygiene. According to the results, the effects of the space on the users have been determined. The main objective of this study is therefore related to the augmentation of space satisfaction in waiting halls of state hospital clinics.
It is hoped that the design suggestions formulated will help increase awareness of those concerned with the design of such interior spaces. At the end of the research, suggestions were made to select appropriate plan schemes for the waiting areas, to improve the indoor quality and to increase the satisfaction with the space.
